Shown here are images from the exhibit "In the Discharge of his Duty: Weapons, Ammunition, and Military Equipment," now on display inside the Special Collections Research Center on the first floor of Swem Library at the College of William & Mary. The exhibit will be on display from October 19, 2011 through April 9, 2012.

The following are transcripts of the label text presented in this case:

Civil War
1861-1865

John Brown

Head of a pike supposedly belonging to John Brown and his followers and used during their armed slave uprising. William Booth Taliaferro
was the commanding general for the security
at Harpers Ferry during the execution of John Brown, which is detailed in his order book.

William B. Taliaferro Papers, Mss. 65 T15

Minie balls

Minie balls were an advancement in ammunition first used in the Crimean War. Their design allows them to be fired more accurately and at longer distances than traditional musket balls. At least one of these minie balls was found at Fort Magruder.

Manuscripts Artifact Collection, Mss. 1.03
Mss 39.1 C76.A10c and Mss.39.1.C76.A10e

Breastplate

Breastplates were supposed to cover a soldier’s heart and were worn on the strap of the ammunition box. The eagle insignia on the front is indicative of the style issued to Union forces.

Manuscripts Artifact Collection, Mss 1.03
Mss.39.1.C76.A10d

Canister shot

Canister shot is a type of anti-personnel ammunition used in cannons, similar to grapeshot. These small
balls were contained within a larger canister. When
the canister was shot at advancing soldiers, it
disintegrated midair, leaving the projectiles to spread and cause damage over a wide area. Various patents were granted during the Civil War for canister shot,
including patent 36820, granted to Smith Groom of Troy, New York.
Manuscripts Artifact Collection, Mss. 1.03
Mss.39.1 C76.A10

Cartridge box

The paper cartridge box features a maker’s mark in black ink with the words "6 Cartridges Colts Army Pistol C.S. Laborator Richmond, V.A." with a
handwritten signature and the date "Oct 27th 1863." The box held ammunition for a Colt Army Pistol, a weapon used by both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. The C.S. Laborator print indicates it was produced by the Confederate States Laboratory in Richmond, Virginia.

Manuscripts Artifact Collection, Mss 1.03
Mss 39.1 C76.A2

A Soldier’s Guide: A Complete Manual and Drill Book
Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson and Brothers, 1861

William Tell Cobb Papers, Mss. 98 C63

From the Special Collections Research Center, Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary. See swem.wm.edu/scrc/ for further information and assistance.

Title: Slave trader ledger of William James Smith
Date Original: 1844-1854
Description: This
ledger meticulously details the prices paid and received for African-American
slaves, as well as the expenses incurred by Smith in undertaking this business
venture, such as feeding, clothing, sheltering, and nursing the people he had
purchased. The details of the book illustrate that Smith took several "trips"
between 1844 and 1854 to buy and sell slaves — detailed records of purchases
and sales of "Negroes" exist for all of the years between 1844 and 1854. The
listing of expenses for the year of 1844 (the most complete account) indicate
that that year Smith traveled from the Piedmont to Charleston, then to Richmond,
Virginia and other towns and cities in central Virginia such as Charlottesville,
Madison, Orange, Gordonsville, and Fredericksburg. The expense records indicate
that Smith returned to the Piedmont via an overland route that passed through
Lincolnton, North Carolina (between Charlotte and Hickory). That year he undertook
business as far south as Hamburg, South Carolina (near Augusta, Georgia).
