Question by Why Envy: How is Kentucky in the South Eastern Conference in football but not VA Tech?
Virginia is a southern state too and just as south as Kentucky!

Yeah, it doesn’t seem to make a lot of geographic sense for Kentucky, but it is not so much geographical. For example, Louisiana Tech is in the Western Athletic Conference, Colorado is in the Pac-12 despite being three states from the Pacific coast, and TCU will be in the Big East in 2012 despite being in Texas. They take factors like academic standards and overall athletic performance (not just football) into account, although there are instances when schools will be split into different conferences depending on the sport (Ex: Notre Dame and BYU). It is really up to the schools themselves when they get a conference invite and Virginia Tech decided to join the ACC in 2004 when the Big East blew up in 2003. Plus Virginia is on the Atlantic Coast, so a move to the ACC made sense. Kentucky has been in the SEC since its inception in 1932 and believe it or not, Kentucky was pretty good at football back in the day when they were coached by Bear Bryant. They were not always bottom dwellers in football, so it makes sense that they are in the SEC.
