Description: Reads in full: “Special Orders No.
39 The 18th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry, under Command of Col. George W. Imboden
will proceed without delay, to night to Parnassus in this County, and there
bivouac for the night. They will move early tomorrow morning to Harrisonburgh
and report to Brig. Gen W.E. Jones. By orders of J.D. Imboden Birg Genl Cmdg”
Imboden was a CSA general who led the Jones-Imboden Raid
into West Virginia between April 24 and May 22, 1863. This letter immediately
predates that operation and depicts logistical preparation for it.
