What do you call those businesses that take the country/western photos of you/your family?

Question by terminated employee: What do you call those businesses that take the country/western photos of you/your family?
Can’t find the one I’m looking for at Virginia Beach oceanfront, but I know it’s there. These are the portraits you get where they dress you up in old western clothes and cowboy hats, and you pose with like old revolvers and shotguns, and the portraits are in black and white. They usually have you sitting up on an old rustic bar or something like that. I can’t find this place by doing “Virginia Beach photography” searches. I know it’s down on the strip somewhere though.

Virginia Beach family hotel info please?

Question by Christine S: Virginia Beach family hotel info please?
I have a business trip to Virginia in June and wanted to take my family to Virginia Beach for 2 or 3 days. I’ve been looking on expedia for beachfront hotels that have a separate sleeping area for our kids, but am not having much success. We’re looking for someplace relatively quiet and not terribly expensive…anyone have any ideas? I’d appreciate any advice, my time off is really limited so want to make the most of it :). Thanks!

Answer by Stacey
I found a hotel on the beach that has connecting rooms, but none that I could see a separate sleeping area in the same room, unless you got a suite and used sleeping bags or cots in the other room.

The hotel on the beach w/ connecting rooms is the Econo Lodge Oceanfront.

If you’re willing to be more inland and travel to the beach, the Country Inn & Suites Norfolk Airport South has connecting rooms and is half the price of the Econo Lodge (and has better reviews).

You can look in the source site below for more info…

Middle Section of the “Family Man” Case from the Will Jenkins Exhibit

Shown here is the middle section of Case 1 for an exhibit on Virginia Author Will Jenkins, whose pen name was Murray Leinster, on display in the Read and Relax area on the first floor of Swem Library. The exhibit was created to celebrate the Virginia General Assembly designating June 27, 2009 as Will Jenkins Day in Virginia.

Case 1 is entitled "Family Man" and includes photos, clippings, and books documenting Jenkins and his family.

The following is from the main label text for this case:

FAMILY MAN

William Fitzgerald Jenkins (who wrote many of his stories under the name Murray Leinster) was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on June 16, 1896, and died at the Francis N. Sanders Nursing Home in Gloucester on June 8, 1975. Although he lived elsewhere during his long career, he maintained his Virginia roots and kept a summer home in Gloucester, where he did much of his writing.

As an adolescent, he began selling stories to the Smart Set and other popular magazines, and at twenty-one was able to resign his position as a bookkeeper at Prudential Insurance in Newark, New Jersey to become a full-time writer.
In 1921 Will Jenkins married the former Mary Mandola; the couple subsequently had four daughters, one of whom lives with her husband at the Jenkins home in Gloucester. Mr. Jenkins served in both world wars: with the Committee of Public Information and the US Army in World War I, and with the Office of War Information in World War II.

The author’s formal education ended after the eighth grade, but his love of science– fueled by the success of contemporaries Thomas Edison and the Wright Brothers– served him well throughout his life. He loved to invent things and write about scanners, deflectors, coders and other forms of “advanced technology.” (His 1946 story ”A Logic Named Joe” predicts the existence of networked home computers, the ability to find information online, and the inherent problems of censorship, scams, and the invasion of privacy.) Mr. Jenkins was awarded two patents on the front-projection filming method in 1955, a technique first used in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In his last interview in 1972, Will Jenkins remarked that he felt a kinship with Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek stories, that they were “his kind” of science fiction. *
Even though Will Jenkins cannot claim the Star Trek stories, according to his daughter Betty DeHardit, royalty checks are still coming in.
Ronald Payne, The Last Murray Leinster Interview (Richmond: Waves Press, 1982), 11.

The following is from a label in this case about how Will Jenkins became Murray Leinster"

“I know a man who writes very well….But he doesn’t sell—because he’d rather feel like a neglected genius than a well-nourished one."
Very early in his career, Mr. Jenkins was introduced to H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan, the editors of the very popular magazine Smart Set. They advised him to adopt a pen name when writing for pulp-fiction magazines in order to preserve his reputation. Murray Leinster was born. Mr. Jenkins also wrote as Louisa Carter Lee and William Fitzgerald. Later on the author reintroduced his real name, shortened to Will F. Jenkins, for more “respectable” publications, such as Collier’s, Good Housekeeping, and the Saturday Evening Post, but he never published science fiction under his own name.

Costs of living in Virginia for a family with 2 kids?

Question by Janet: Costs of living in Virginia for a family with 2 kids?
What would the budget for a family with 2 kids (age 7 and 4) living in Virginia and a total gross income per year of 110000 USD look like? The father works as a software developer and the mother works as an environmental scientist/chemist.

I am thinking about the costs for

– private primary school
– food
– healthcare
– dentalcare
– house insurrance
– car insurrance
– other insurrance
– rent/mortgage
– utilities (gas, water, heat, light)
– cable
– other taxes than income tax
– transportation
– clothes
– any other items that is not listed above

What would your estimate be of how much money this family would have left for savings after all expenses have been paid?

Best answer:

Answer by The New UKKR
110,000
20,000 mortgage
10,000 health care
? school
10,000 food
8,000 car payment and gas
2,000 car insurance
5,000 taxes
4,000 utilities
4,000 clothing
1,000 insurance
600 cable

That’s about 65,000 dollars without the primary school or unexpected things that always come up. Then, furniture and old credit card debts or college loans have to be paid for. Maybe money for 401k or something although lots of companies are paring back on that in this economy (it’s the first thing to go). The kids need money for school projects, and giving to charity is something that people do. I assume income taxes and Social Security can take $ 30,000 out of the paycheck. All of those numbers can go up and down. If it was me, I would always save at least 10% of my check, and I would also set aside lots of money that your budget doesn’t catch at first like trips to McDonalds, Pizza Hut, cigarettes or slurpees from convenience stores, cups of coffee from Starbucks. That stuff never seems to find its way into the budget until you wake up one day and ask why you are 15% over budget. And, that is always the cause. The choice is up to you: you can live 10% over budget or 10% under budget. I hope you avoid the credit trap and make sure you come under budget every month for years and years to come. Good luck.

If the car or fridge breaks down, or you find yourself without a job, you will want 20,000 in the savings account.
