Born in Ohio in 1817, Bushrod Johnson served on the underground railroad and graduated from West Point, but was driven out of the army after illegal actions. He served as a professor at various schools, including the University of Nashville. Interestingly, when the Civil War broke out he joined the Confederate Army. Technically captured at the surrender of Fort Donelson, he simply walked out unimpeded through the porous Union lines. Johnson fought ably at Shiloh, at Perryville, Stones River, and Chickamauga, where he distinguished himself leading the attack that broke the Union position, and the Siege of Knoxville. He was then promoted to major general and sent to Virginia, where he distinguished himself again at the Battle of the Crater. However his command was destroyed at Sayler’s Creek and he was paroled at Appomattox Court House without a command. Johnson returned to Nashville where he co-chancellored the University of Nashville.
