The Tanks

Historic piping from the Marlette Lake to Virginia City water system built in the 1870’s. An engineering marvel at the time, the line crossed two mountain ranges and a valley (without pumps) to provide Sierra water to dry Virginia City to provide the town and mines with water. Still in operation today, you can hear the water rushing through the system.
In the middle ground, the tortured hills once held ancient forest that was cut for the mines, a 1980’s fire wiped out the new growth. Dry climate and poor soils make regrowth slow.
This view is of Washoe Valley from the southwest. Reno is over the hills on the left.
