Where is a good place between MA and MS to stop for the night? I”m driving there and this is my 1st road trip?

Question by sailorchick8786: Where is a good place between MA and MS to stop for the night? I”m driving there and this is my 1st road trip?
I’m not sure how to go about planning this. I know that its going to take about 23 hours not giving traffic a thought. Should I book a hotel ahead and make little stops goal destinations for the trip??

The map programs simply divide the miles by 70mph and don’t even take stopping for fuel into account.

Boston to Jackson is over 1400 miles, and Boston to Gulfport is almost 1500 miles (which is closer to 30 hours of driving).

Boston to Washington, DC is about 450 miles. You almost certainly will encounter heavy traffic in the “Boston-Washington corridor” so try to get through it on the first day. Stop for the night somewhere in VA past Washington, such as Winchester, VA.

Knoxville, TN is about halfway between Winchester, VA and Jackson, MS..

Have your car serviced & inspected by a real mechanic before leaving home. Make sure you know how to change the tire, and that the spare is good. Also make sure your registration, inspection sticker, & proof of insurance are up-to-date.

Yes, make hotel reservations. Note that “government/military rate” is NOT always the best rate at a hotel but do ask.

I’m taking a road trip from San Francisco to Virginia City, NV…any places to visit along the way?

Question by VilmerFud: I’m taking a road trip from San Francisco to Virginia City, NV…any places to visit along the way?
Any must sees along the way? I’m into sight seeing old western towns such as Virginia City, also any nature sight seeing places, but give me all of your thoughts, I’m open to go anywhere as long as it’s worth going there.

Definitely stop in Carson City and ride the train and see the museum at Nevada State Railroad Museum (Mon – Fri only though):

I wouldn’t take 80 to Reno and then south, I would get to the Central Valley and take 50 through Tahoe and then over into the Carson Valley, so pretty.

Places to go on a fishing trip in pennsylvania, ohio, or west virginia?

Question by Allison S: Places to go on a fishing trip in pennsylvania, ohio, or west virginia?
i would like to take my dad on a fishing trip next spring/summer. i was wondering if there were any lakes to go fishing on in western pennsylvania, eastern ohio, or north western west virginia. preferably a lake where we won’t run into a lot of people. also, if there’s a place where you can rent a fishing boat nearby, that would be nice. 🙂

any other tips on what to bring or anything like that would be helpful.

Trip to authentic Virginia City Montana

We took a trip to an authentic western town (buildings were original from the the 1800’s). On the way, we saw the effects of an earthquake in 1959 that toppled the side of a hill and dammed up a river to form ‘Quake’ Lake. On the way back, we saw some panoramic views of the mountains.

Can you recommend some trip planning software for off-road 4×4 Jeeping?

Question by Elisabeth L: Can you recommend some trip planning software for off-road 4×4 Jeeping?
My brother loves driving his Jeep Wrangler on off-road trails. I would like to get him some trip planning software, for Christmas. It would not need to be GPS-compatible, but he does have a Garmin, in case that is relevant. He lives in Virginia and mostly goes Jeeping in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. He has excellent computer skills, so software complexity would not be a problem. I have seen “TOPO” map software, but don’t know if that would be the best choice. I would appreciate advice from any of you Jeepers, out there. 🙂 Thank you!

i go off roading mostly in Tennessee and Kentucky. I have found most computer mapping software totally useless for off road trails. The TOPO maps do a good job of showing the terrain and are helpful in knowing how steep and area is, however, they usually don’t show the trails very well.

I have had the best luck just getting paper maps form the local parks where I run. If you know which parks he visits, check the forums for those parks and see if anyone has made a custom map of the park.
